The Dresden Cantata

J Brookes

J. Brookes is considered to be one of Cardiff's finest poets. His work has featured in most of the major poetry magazines in Wales, from Planet to Poetry Wales. He was also the editor of the poetry magazine, The Yellow Crane. The Dresden Cantata brings together all the familiar aspects of his poetry - his delight in celebrating everyday people, places and experiences; his skill in surprising the reader with surreal twists; his off-beat sense of humour; and the ease with which he conjures up unusual, yet believable images. In some senses, Brookes is an old fashioned poet, a romantic, a lover of words and of life, but his style can definitely be described as modern, combining free verse with more traditional forms.
